Miles was part of my biggest season 6 theory that never came to pass, and I hate it.

The Temple episodes of Season 6 established a bunch of rules about interacting with the Man in Black, how if he talked to you or you looked into him you'd be under his power or whatever. You couldn't kill him if you interacted with him basically. We had those rules in place pretty much just for Sayid ad Claire for a few episodes in a dumb sub-plot, but you know what would've been really great?

Miles, who managed to barely dodge encountering the monster all season and was surviving with Alpert and Lapidus off on the sidelines and has something or other in his possessions that I can't remember now, if anything... he should've been the one to surprise kill the monster. Not Kate. Just showing up during the Jack/Smokey fight and shooting him because that would follow established lore and be a very cool surprise. Not Kate for no reason with that stupid line of hers and....

as much as I dislike season 6 the "flash sideways" aspect never bothered me. I called it being the afterlife early on and thought it was ok. the on-island stuff is god awful though.

I don't mind so much the reveal of it, but just the build up. Mystery for mystery sake became like... like... tartar buildup. Lost forgot how to floss.

Ugh, I'm already getting defensively angry.

I don't think there's much disagreement that the final episode of the show contained resolutions and elements to things established very early on in the narrative, bookending the entire show. Those plans were thought about and in place as touchstones to get towards.

It was everything getting to that finale that came out of nowhere and went nowhere!!! The Temple, The Lighthouse, The Candidates, The Well, The Sideways, The Rules, The Claire, The Sayid, The Convenient Plot Armor is Actual In-Universe Lampshaded Convenient Plot Armor, et cetera et cetera et cetera.

Why does Lost give me such bubble bursting need to flood?

I don't remember the exact timeline of when they established that he was immortal but it seems plausible that it was a retroactive decision by the writers. Carbonell was supposed to be on a new CBS show which probably would have meant he couldn't be on Lost anymore, but then the show got canceled due to the writers' strike.

Cane, I think? Something with Jimmy Smits.

Ab Aeterno (a.k.a. the much heralded Wrestling With Angels episode) was excellent and the best part of Season 6.

Like, Alpert sits at 20 on my list for all the reasons mentioned. He's a mysterious character who gets both more complex and more dumb with age. I'm also contemplating now how so many problems on Lost are defined by arbitrary rules that end up ignored or broken. The exact compass direction to reach the island, that if you talk with smokey you can never defeat him, everything with Jacob.

Maybe the Swan Hatch was an experiment after all! Pressing the numbers in does work and save the world every 108 minutes, but that doesn't mean every dumb rule there is needs to actually be followed.

Ilana is another one of those characters who sticks in my craw because of what she represents more than what she does. She is the perfect symbol for another huge flaw in the series, which you'll see as a recurring theme in these write-ups: needlessly wasted potential.

We're introduced to Ilana in season 5, seemingly too late to really have any meaningful character development, but the writers persisted anyway. After the unsurprising reveal that she actually knows more about the Island than she let on, we soon discover that she is essentially a bodyguard/protector of Jacob--the godlike, omniscient presence across several seasons by this point.

And that's where Ilana begins to enrage me. One would think that someone not only connected to Jacob outside the Island, but someone who is entrusted to protect him, would offer something interesting to the lore. Instead, we get nothing by way of background, character, or even a thematic revelation from her. She is just a plot device helping one set of characters get to another, with a passing reference to Jacob acting as a "father figure" to her. How? When? Why? These are questions that could have taken the character in so many places and could have perhaps even salvaged some of the weakest parts of seasons 5-6.

But no. The writers do nothing with Ilana. And then they explode her when she was done serving her purpose. Absolutely embarrassing trash writing.

The Supreme Intelligence stuff sucked, but I feel like it does a lot less to detract from the movie than Danvers being boring does.

Danvers doesn't have much to work with when the big bad's MO of recontrolling Carol is, "You failed a bunch. Remember when you failed?" without even understanding or acknowledging with her supreme intellect that those events were followed by immediately getting back up. Like, that's the button of the big bad. Oh noes.

First thing that comes to mind a month or two after watching the movie? Nick & Carol doing the dishes.

I really have to say their dynamic and building of trust over the course of the film is so, so good. Like, it's up there with Steve/Bucky, Tasha/Clint, T'Challa/Shuri pure connections.

I still groan thinking about a lot of the Supreme Intelligence generality, lots of the Kree stuff, and the five or six "That's not a cat" bits before it was revealed it wasn't a cat because it's such a surprise when you point it out every ten minutes before it happens.

I didn't like Rambeau that much and thought her scenes with Carol lacked heavily, but that could change on a rewatch. I felt Carol+Fury's bond, but Danvers+Rambeau was empty that sisterly bond both pre- and post-trauma of your best friend dying in a plane crash. If the many flashbacks had a good chemistry at all, I'd have probably come out more favorably as of course current Rambeau would be in complete shock this whole time with her amnesiac partner. But same in past as in present, and I think that's part of a lot of the knocks people are giving Brie Larson.

Also, personally frustrated how much of the negative side of the chart didn't touch on the awful Supreme Intelligence. Was that just me then?

That made a top ten.... hmmm....

The one I could see doing that most whilst still being number 23 would be Thor: The Dark World. I can see Incredible Hulk getting a top ten, but enough of a cushion in lists not to be at the very bottom; and I have trouble seeing Iron Man 2 making a top ten in any category (including Sam Rockwell performances). Thor: The Dark World has some legitimately strong scenes, and enough fans in Thor & Loki that I can see it high on a list.

Easy. Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser.

Joe Dirt isn't the funniest movie, but it has a memorable spark of life and humanity that allows for a somewhat empathetic underdog protagonist. Joe Dirt 2 is when you take Joe Dirt, have him acutely aware of how **** he and his life is, any potentially funny joke is marred by a deep dark yawning maw of depression on the face of the character, and a dearth lack of plot or anything potentially funny. Worst movie I've watched.
